How to Prepare for Your First Photoshoot
If you’ve never had a professional photo session before, you’re not alone. Most clients step into their first shoot feeling a little unsure of what to expect. The good news? Preparation is simple, and even small steps can go a long way in helping you feel confident and comfortable.
1. Get Plenty of Rest
Showing up well-rested makes a noticeable difference in your skin, energy, and expression. Sleep affects everything! From posture to how easily you relax into poses.
2. Hydrate (More Than You Think)
Hydration improves skin clarity and reduces tightness or dryness. Drink water consistently for 48 hours leading up to your session.
Try to avoid drinking alcohol. It can cause your skin tone to turn red which can make retouching more challenging.
3. Keep Skin + Grooming Simple
Avoid trying new skincare products right before the shoot. Stick to your normal routine to avoid redness or irritation.
For hair:
Avoid major changes the same week.
A fresh trim can look great, but don’t experiment with new styles last-minute.
4. Bring Clean, Pressed Clothing
Wrinkles show on camera. Steam or iron outfits the day before, and bring them on hangers if possible.
5. Communicate Your Vision
Before the session, share inspiration images or mood boards. Photographers thrive when they understand the emotion, style, and energy you want in your portraits.
6. Arrive a Few Minutes Early
Rushing elevates stress. The first few minutes of the session are about easing into the space, getting comfortable, and building momentum.
7. Trust the Process
You don’t need to know how to pose. My job as a photographer is to guide you through everything. From posture and expression to angles and pacing. The more you relax, the more natural and expressive the images become.
